Hi, My Name Is Andy - or Kē lǎoshī 柯老师
I’m a certified Mandarin Chinese teacher of 8+ years in NJ public schools, a father of two, and an honorably discharged United States Marine. After years studying and working in Taipei, Beijing, and Shanghai, I found a passion in helping students like yours fall in love with Mandarin — and actually stick with it! My teaching blends storytelling, real-world cultural insight, and a whole lot of Jersey charm.

Radicals, Typing & Tones
As a non-native speaker, I teach Mandarin differently than the way a native speaker may have been taught, and different than how they might think to teach. We don't drop into full immersion right away, we build up a scaffolded vocabulary to help you scale the Great Wall of Mandarin!
Getting to Know Yourself
Once the fundamentals are in place, we start building your biography one one word at a time, so that you can introduce yourself, talk about your family, discuss your background, interests, daily routines and life as a student of Chinese.
Stories, Songs,
& Culture
Every week in a standard class, I teach my students through stories - both Eastern and Western style stories. These stories are often old fables and parables that are well known to young learners, but retold through the Chinese language so that students can immediately understand the content.
Talking about the World
As students advance, we move on from stories and on to real world discussion on a variety of topics, often based on current events or hot button issues, so that students can really start to expand their language abilities and prepare for using Chinese in real life.
