The real difference

Duolingo is the best habit-building app ever made. A 400-day streak is a real accomplishment and the green owl will guilt you into keeping it. What Duolingo doesn't do well is produce conversational Chinese speakers — the Mandarin path is shorter than almost any other language and the sentences often prioritize comedy over utility. Jersey Zhongwen is the opposite tradeoff: less gamification, more real teaching. If Duolingo got you to day 100 and you still can't hold a conversation, that's the gap this course is built to close.

Pick Duolingo if

You want gamified daily habits, you're okay with limited depth, or you want to keep your current streak going.

Pick Jersey Zhongwen if

You've already hit the ceiling on Duolingo's Mandarin path, you want to actually hold a conversation, or you'd rather pay $88 once than $84 per year forever.
